How to Size and Fit Pole Bungs Correctly

This guide explains how to size and fit pole bungs and pole nose bungs using the Fox Worx fitting method. Follow these steps to improve pole section protection and avoid preventable fitting damage.

Identify section and size first

Before fitting, confirm the pole make and model, then match each bung to the correct section. Each bung has an engraved number in the base indicating the corresponding section. The section immediately before the top kit generally does not have a base in the bung and is therefore not numbered.

Check What to confirm Why it matters
Brand and model Exact pole family and version Avoids incorrect assumptions across similar model names
Engraved numbers Number on bung base matches section position Improves fit sequence and consistency
Top-kit transition Section before top kit often unnumbered Prevents mismatch in this specific position

Step-by-step fitting method

Official Fox Worx method

  1. Insert the base of the bung first.
  2. Ensure it is a snug fit, but do not apply excessive force.
  3. If the fit is tight, place bungs in hot water for 30 seconds before fitting.
  4. Confirm correct seating: the small shoulder on the bung should sit flush with the end of the section.
  5. Repeat by section number so each bung is fitted to the intended position.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using excessive force

If resistance feels high, stop and reset. Warm the bung in hot water for 30 seconds and retry with controlled pressure.

Wrong section mapping

Match the engraved number on the bung base to the corresponding section before inserting.

Ignoring shoulder position

A correctly fitted bung sits flush at the shoulder. If it is not flush, remove carefully and re-fit.

Assuming one fit for every model

Fit tolerances vary by make and model family. Check compatibility first, the labels on the rear of our packets list the models they're designed to fit.

Care and replacement guidance

Check bungs regularly for wear from repeated handling. Replace worn parts to maintain secure fit and consistent section protection, especially for poles used frequently in match and pleasure sessions.
