What are pole bungs?

A pole bung is a flexible insert that sits in the end of a fishing pole section. Its job is simple: take the knocks that would otherwise land on the carbon. Section ends can easily get chipped when setting up and breaking down, or even during transport, and a chipped section end is often the start of a split.

You'll hear them called pole bungs, pole protectors, pole nose bungs, pole nose cones, or section protectors. They all describe the same thing.
